Hello Brad, Thank you for your question! We have seen, oftentimes, that those who perform the cutting may provide this "service" as a source of income. In some communities, these individuals may be referred to as a "traditional practitioner" or "traditional cutter," that the local community trusts to perform FGM/C. Given the diversity of the communities that may practice FGM/C, we wanted to share this article with you that reviews the different strategies that have been implemented to teach new "income-generating skills" and educate and raise awareness about FGM/C to discourage continuing the practice. Additionally, something less spoken about is the trend toward medicalization of FGM/C, where in some countries performing FGM/C is legal within healthcare settings, or in others where FGM/C may still be performed illegally by some healthcare providers.
